Healthcare Assistants for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

We are now looking for healthcare assistants for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Västmanlands Hospital in Västerås. With us, you will be part of a dedicated team working with some of the most acute and complex patients in healthcare. As a healthcare assistant in the ICU, you play a vital role in the care team, where your work makes a concrete difference for patients and their relatives.

Job Responsibilities

In the intensive care unit, the county's sickest patients are cared for, with failure in vital functions such as breathing, circulation, and consciousness. Many of our patients are unconscious or sedated and need assistance with all aspects of care.

As a healthcare assistant with us, you will be welcomed into a staff-dense environment with good camaraderie and close teamwork. We work in teams together with nurses, doctors, and physiotherapists. Our patients require constant monitoring and presence of staff. To make this possible, healthcare assistants work with one to two patients, depending on the care needs. You are a crucial piece in the care of our patients and their relatives.

Your workdays will consist of close care and being the patient's security during severe illness and injury. During our rounds, we prefer the whole team to participate if possible, as healthcare assistants have important insights and observations about how the patient is doing. We work in a technology-rich environment with many different devices around the bed that the patient needs, such as monitoring equipment, ventilators, medication pumps, and dialysis.

The training period is approximately ten weeks with the possibility of extension. After the training period, you will have a colleague who is your mentor during the first year. It is important for us that you feel secure in your professional role.

About the Workplace

The Intensive Care Unit at Västmanlands Hospital in Västerås is focused on general intensive care. We currently have up to 8 beds and about 850 patients per year. Our goal is to expand with more beds in the future. With us, you will meet patients of all ages with various diagnoses, so the variation is as great as the competence is high. It is exciting to be part of this advanced form of care!

Within Region Västmanland, we have a time valuation model that affects the number of hours worked when you work nights. This means that there will be better schedules with opportunities for recovery when working on rotation. The employment entails a collective responsibility for staffing every day of the year and every hour of the day. The calculations in the time valuation model are based on a full-time measure of 37 hours/week. If you want to work only nights, you have a weekly working time of 32 hours as a full-time measure, and then there is no other time valuation. Even if you are interested in pure night shifts, you need to be prepared to initially work a period of days/evenings to gain the experience and routines required for night work.

For us, it is important that you feel good and enjoy your job, which is why we offer you:

  • tailored introduction program
  • opportunity for professional development
  • free training at our fully equipped gym
  • healthcare allowance of 3000 SEK/year

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has a healthcare assistant education with certification for a protected professional title and at least 2 years of professional experience as a healthcare assistant. If you have worked in emergency care or intensive care before, it is certainly a great advantage, but we also welcome you if you have the curiosity and drive to learn intensive care work.

As a person, you contribute with a positive attitude to your work. You have the ability to create a calm and secure environment for your patients and colleagues and thrive in close collaboration with others. The pace of work can vary, so you need to be prepared for when plans change and be able to quickly adjust. There is much to learn here, so it is important to be curious and always dare to ask if you are unsure.

With us, you will have the opportunity to work in a safe and educational environment where we value your commitment and your willingness to contribute. We look forward to welcoming you to our team and giving you the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.
